Soon students from both high schools and colleges across the country will walk across the stage to accept their diplomas. And as soon as they turn their robes in and get the real thing, they will be the latest group of young adults thrown into the world. The graduates of the class of 2017 were mostly born in 1999. Here’s a look at the world they came up in.

  • They are as old as The Phantom Menace. Midichlorians, Jar-Jar and pod racing have always been part ofthe Star Wars world for them.
  • 9/11 happened before they went to preschool. The United Sates has had an actable military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan for most of their lives.
  • A phone has never been just a phone to them. They’ve always had a phone with camera and internet access.
  • Their parents have always been on Facebook. They have no active memory of MySpace, Friendster or Classmates.com.
  • They’ve never know a world without online shopping.
  • Netflix is older than them and has been stream video since they were eight-years-old, and YouTube has been streaming videos since they were six.
  • They’ve probably never had to use a paper map.
  • Justin Timberlake and Beyonce have been a solo artist most of their lives.
  • To them, Dr. Dre is a headphone magnate, Ice Cube is a movie star and LL Cool J is a TV actor.
  • They are barely a year older than the PS2, and younger than the Nintendo 64.
  • Record albums are collector’s items to them, and there’s a good chance they have never bought a new CD.
  • Nirvana and Pearl Jam are as much Classic Rock to them as Led Zeplin and Boston.
  • Livin’ la Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin, “Believe” by Cher and “If You Had My Love” by a pre-JLo Jennifer Lopes were three of the big hits when they were born.

Add an ‘80s theme party to your entertaining – and you’ll be guaranteed an epic night for an epic decade.

Big permed hair, neon leg warmers, Cyndi Lauper…

Rubik’s Cubes, Top Gun, the original Transformers toys…

The A-Team, Knight Rider, Miami Vice, breakdancing…

…are some of the many things associated with the 80s.

In particular, the music and over-the-top fashion.

Give old friends and new the chance to time travel back to the ’80s with this theme party idea.

Games and Activities 80’s Style

80’s themed party games can include 80’s trivia , breakdance contest, lip sync contest. Keep your guests entertained and buy a bunch of Rubik’s Cubes for the tables.  Travel back in time with AMJ’s Giant Games from the 80’s like our Giant Connect Four, Giant Light BrightGiant Twister, or our Giant Hungry Hippo game. Relive the 80’s by renting one of our retro Atari game consoles including CentipedeAsteroidsPacMan that will have everyone feeling nostalgic.

Remember the movie Big with Tom Hanks how about renting our Zoltar and amaze your guests.  Don’t forget a Photo Booth so everyone can remember your event with fun photo strips.

Another neat idea is to have all the guests bring a picture of them in the 80s, hang them all up together, and have everyone guess who is who. You can also have guests tell their best/worst memories and have everyone vote on which is best/worst.  Don’t forget to have a lip-syncing contest!

Let everyone know it’s a fancy dress night

Dressing up 1980s style for this ’80s theme party is A LOT OF FUN – and a must. You can’t throw an 80s party without this. Think leg warmers in neon colors, fingerless gloves (a la Michael Jackson), jumpsuits, stonewashed denim, mini skirts, mullets…

Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran, and Grace Jones were all the fashion icons at the time. As were many TV shows and movies. Take inspiration from ’80s music videos. Robert Palmer’s famous video ‘Addicted to Love’ is the reason why the girls on the top are dressed that way.

Decide on your ’80s theme party decorations

Everyone’s got their own take of the ’80s, so you may choose to decorate according your own experience. Alternatively, you may want to evoke a general feel of the decade, with these decoration ideas.

  • Dress your tabletops and walls in neon colors
  • Play music from the ’80s
  • Cover your walls in posters in ’80s icons. Think Bananarama, Prince, Beverly Hills Cop
Decide on your ’80s theme party food

Serve up regular finger food, but why not name them after ’80s song titles, just for fun? For example:

  • Eternal Flame[d] Chicken (the Bangles)
  • Poppadum Preach (Madonna)
  • When Smokey [Bacon] Sings (ABC)
  • I Get Weak [for Potato Salad] (Belinda Carlisle)
  • [This Chilli’s] Hot in the City (Billy Idol)
  • [Milk]shake Your Love (Debbie Gibson)
  • [Chocolate] Pleasure Principle (Janet Jackson)

For drinks menu, you could serve – pink champagne, lemonade, shandy, beer and a neon-colored fruit punch. AMJ has concessions, games  and much more to make your 80’s party one awesome event!
